            Hello world, my name is Ben.

            I see a little differently, shaped by a long-standing interest in culture, home-cooking, and languages. That probably comes from a Singaporean Chinese background, studying both history and geography.

            Design, therefore, has to be contextual. It was this belief that led me to two stints in Shanghai to work for some of the best global creative agencies, at a time when many peers chose to head West. It’s also where I was first exposed to brand strategy proper, and learnt to unpack it for a Chinese audience.

            Branding can be a rather loud and bombastic process — boardroom pitches, action-packed workshops, sweeping mission statements, bold visuals — all done in relative haste and wrapped up in a static set of guidelines.

            There is a different way — one that uncovers a brand’s essence, its lived character, and the arc it naturally follows, whilst letting it mature in its own time. Meaningful branding begins by ignoring the competition at birth (or rebirth).

            Let us quietly build something lasting together.

我的视角略有不同——多年对文化、家常料理与语言的兴趣,使我习惯从人的脉络去理解世界。这大概也与我身为新加坡华人、求学时主修历史与人文地理的背景有关。

对我而言,设计必须沉静于文化之中。正是这样的信念,让我两度前往上海,在国际知名的创意机构任职。当时许多同行选择往西,而我选择往东——也在这里,我首次接触到真正扎根于中国的品牌策略,并学会如何为在地语境拆解它。

常规的品牌流程往往声势浩大:会议、工作坊、使命宣言、大胆的视觉尝试……过程促急,最终收束在一本静态的品牌指南里。

但其实还有另一条路——一种能探出品牌的精髓、性格、自然节律与长远走向的方法;一种让品牌按自身的步伐成熟的方式。若要从根本上打造有意义的品牌,起点便得暂且不看竞争对手。

让我们安静而踏实地,构建一个能长久存在的未来。
